ORGANIC SUPERFOOD for HAIR: Avocado

HOLY GUACAMOLE! Avocados can make everything better, including your hair!

We all know avocados can be used to make a banging guacamole, but it turns out that avocados are actually super good for your hair, as well!

When we discovered avocados were fruits, in the berry family, we were like, “shut the front door!” Who would have guessed? But, yes, avocados are fruits. And, this non-sweet, green fruit is full of healthy nutrients for hair.

Avocados offer about 20 different types of vitamins and minerals in each serving. Each one is loaded with Potassium, Iron, Copper, Vitamins A, D, E, B6, and B9 as well as Protein, Amino Acid, and Magnesium.

So, it’s no wonder they’re on the “Do eat” list of most leading diets, and their use in beauty cosmetics dates back as far as Aztec civilizations and Ancient Egyptian culture.

There are so many beneficial nutrients in avocados to review them all, so we’ve compiled a list of a few below:

Potassium:

offers several benefits to your hair and body. Our bodies use potassium to create protein, build new muscle tissue, burn carbohydrates, hydrate our skin, and grow hair. Research has shown that a lack of potassium can cause hair loss. The good news though, is that simply adding potassium rich foods, like avocados, back into your diet can stop hair loss and promote hair growth.

Together Copper and Iron, both found in avocados, play a big role in blood cell production. Copper helps the body to absorb Iron, a necessary element for hemoglobin production. Hemoglobin plays a critical role in cell repair, thereby stimulating hair growth. Copper also plays an important role in producing collagen. Copper works side by side with lysyl oxidase in the synthesis of collagen. Collagen is a key component of healthy hair and skin. Collagen encloses each hair strand, making hair stronger.

Each serving of avocado provides 6% of your needed Vitamin E intake. Studies have shown that Vitamin E is one of the best antioxidants for protecting your skin and hair from harmful free radicals like pollution and sun damage.

Pantothenic Acid, or Vitamin B5, works as a highly efficient humectant and emollient. It attracts and binds moisture to hair and skin, producing soft, supple, and shiny results. When applied topically to your hair and scalp, Vitamin B5 penetrates the cuticle and follicle shaft and forms a smooth covering to surround each hair cuticle. So, you really can kiss bad hair goodbye.

With all these benefits, avocados make an excellent addition to your beauty routine. Like most superfoods, avocados, are beneficial for your hair through consumption as well as via topical use. ORGANIC SUPERFOOD for HAIR: Honey

When it comes to healthy hair, it turns out, honey really is THE BEES KNEES!

People have been using honey for thousands of years. The oldest known record of honey being harvested by people is painted on a cave in Spain. The cave art depicts a woman harvesting wild honey, and is believed to be between 7,000-15,000 years old.

Honey makes an excellent sweetener, but we haven’t been cultivating honey just used for its sweet, pleasurable taste. Honey has also been used for its cosmetic and healing properties for thousands of years.

The medicinal use of honey is mentioned in ancient texts including the Bible, Koran, and Torah, and is documented for its healing and cosmetic properties by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

Honey was widely used for its cosmetic benefits by the Ancient Egyptians in makeup and anti-aging creams. There is even historical evidence that Queen Cleopatra regularly bathed in a mixture of honey and goats milk, as a moisturizing, anti-aging regimen.

And, when you look at what makes up honey, it’s no wonder that it has a history in medicine and cosmetology. Raw, unprocessed, honey contains a wide range of beneficial substances related to human health and nutrition.

You can find all eight of the B-complex vitamins, along with Vitamin A, C, D, E, and K in honey. Honey also has over 10 important minerals, including iodine, potassium, and calcium. But, thats not all. Honey also contains hormones, and is both an antibacterial agent and humectant. So, which of these benefits makes honey healthy for hair?

As a natural humectant, honey enhances your hair’s ability to hold in moisture, when applied to the surface of hair. This makes honey a great natural conditioner for dry and damaged hair. It can go so far as to help sooth the scalp and provides a protective, moisture rich barrier to hair shafts.

The amino acids and vitamin C found in honey, among nearly 80 other nutritious substances contained in honey, work together to help speed the growth of healthy tissues. This makes honey a good choice for promoting healthy, hair growth.

Because of its antibacterial properties, honey has the ability to prevent and soothe issues like dandruff or scalp infections. It also has the ability to cleanse and strengthen hair follicles, thereby diminishing clogged pores, reducing hair fall, and boosting hair growth.

With all these benefits, honey makes an excellent addition to your beauty routine. But, keep in mind, not all honey is made the same. When looking for honey to use, be sure that you are using 100% natural honey, as many stores sale honey products that have been diluted using a mixture of honey and syrup. Reports show that local farmer’s markets and natural food stores carry pure, raw and unfiltered honey, meaning the honey will contain all of its natural benefits. So, be sure to check the ingredients and manufacturing method associated with honey before you purchase honey.

Like most superfoods, honey, is beneficial for your hair through consumption as well as via topical use. To help you incorporate honey into your daily routine, we’ve included a recipe for a layered breakfast yogurt with honey, below. And, you can find a list of DIY hair mask ideas in our DIY Hair Care Blog.

Packed with potassium, folic acid, and vitamin E, BANANAS are a fruit worth going apes over. Together, these three nutrients work to promote hair growth, as well as moisturize and build healthy shiny hair.

What are these nutrients? And, what can they do for hair?

Potassium

Bananas are well known for containing a high level of potassium, a key mineral that your body needs to function properly. The good news though, is that simply adding potassium rich foods, like bananas, back into your diet can stop hair loss and promote hair growth.

Folic acid

Folic Acid, also known as Folate, is a vitamin commonly referred to as Vitamin B9. Like Potassium, Vitamin B9 has several significant roles in maintaining healthy hair, including increasing cell regeneration, stimulating hair growth, and preventing premature greying through the regulation of red blood cell production in your body. Vitamin B9 will also help moisturize your hair, making your hair soft and shiny.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another vitamin found in bananas that is important for your hair. Studies have shown that Vitamin E is one of the best antioxidants for protecting your skin and hair from harmful free radicals like pollution and sun damage. And, not only does vitamin E protect hair, it is also an essential vitamin in the production of new tissue and helps increase blood circulation and oxygen throughout the body. This role effectively aids in the growth of healthy hair.
